Newman
John Newman (right), a former resident of the Cullowhee-Sylva area who now resides in the Macon County community of Cartoogechaye, was honored with the Eva Adcock Award at Western Carolina University's 30th annual Mountain Heritage Day on Saturday, Sept. 25. The award was established in 1992 to recognize longtime and significant service to Mountain Heritage Day by a member of the festival organizing committee. Newman worked at Western 31 years before retiring in May 2002 as systems, networking and operations manager for the university's Division of Information Technology. He has volunteered his services to Mountain Heritage Day for 13 years. Presenting the award to Newman is Doug Davis, a former Western staff member who guided the festival as committee chairman for most of its first two decades.
